People with developmental disabilities have much to give to enhance, enrich, and strengthen our society. They have the same rights as everyone to pursue independence, productivity, integration and inclusion.

Meet Your Neighbor is a project sponsored by the Alabama Council for Developmental Disabilities and coordinated through the UAB Civitan International Research Center. Research has shown that far too many people in our society believe that individuals with developmental disabilities are incapable of working and being contributing members of society.

Year 2001 - 2002 Activities

One of the goals of Meet Your Neighbor is to help change these erroneous beliefs while making Alabamians aware of the many positive contributions persons with developmental disabilities provide our communities. We began our efforts in 2001 with a poster campaign (the logo image now used for this site) distributed in English and Spanish to focus public awareness on issues related to developmental disabilities. Meet Your Neighbor is active throughout the state of Alabama through its Guiding Council which is comprised of consumers and professionals.

Meet Your Neighbor Video

Starting in the Fall of 2001 we began planning a video to help communicate the positive contributions of persons with disabilities at home, worship, school, work, and play. This video called "Meet Your Neighbor" had its World Premiere at a reception hosted by Alabama Power Company at its corporate headquarters in Birmingham on May 16, 2002. The video was shot on location in Birmingham, Montgomery, Tuscaloosa, and at various locales in Alabama. The MYN Guiding Council is appreciative of the efforts of many persons, families, businesses, state, and local agencies who helped make this effort possible.

The Meet Your Neighbor video is being provided free of charge (except shipping and handling when needed) to schools, libraries, businesses, human resource personnel, civic organizations, and to many other persons and groups with an interest in developmental disabilities. Initially 1,000 copies will be distributed. Call Vicki Coffey at 205-934-2965 if you would like to know more or to obtain copies of the video. An onlien version of the Meet Your Neighbor video is available on the Civitan Research Center media web site.
