Autism
Clinic - The UAB Autism Clinic began operation
in September of 2001 and is coordinated through the UAB School
of
Medicine. It is located in the Civitan-Sparks Clinics at the
Civitan International Research Center in the heart of the UAB
Medical
Center. We evaluate
children ages 2 to 12 years of age in order to determine if
they have an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)/Pervasive Developmental
Disorder (PDD). Evaluation results are used to assist families,
school personnel, medical practitioners, and other providers
develop
effective treatment programs.
Audiology
Clinic - Provides evaluations
for assessing hearing impairment in children and adults with developmental
disabilities. Assists in fitting and dispensing hearing aids and
assistive listening devices.
Augmentative
Communication and Assistive Technology Clinic -
Provides assessments for individuals who are functionally non speaking
in addition to having physical, cognitive, and sensory problems.
Offers technical assistance to families, professionals, schools,
and community agencies regarding communication needs, including
sign language, communication boards, electronic voice output devices,
as well as a range of assistive instruments, such as personalized
switches and computers.
Behavioral
Assessment Clinic - Specializes in the evaluation
of behavioral, emotional, and adjustment disorders of childhood
and adolescence that may be impeding optimal development. A
particular emphasis is the assessment of Attention Deficit/
Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). School and medical records are
sought and input is obtained from teachers and parents prior
to the child being seen in Clinic. Comprehensive recommendations
and treatment plans are provided to the family and primary
care physician. Psychological treatment services are provided
at Sparks that includes: individual and family therapy, parent
education groups, and social skills training. School consultation

Child
Development Clinic - Specializes in evaluations of children, ages 3-7 years,
whose development, learning, or behavior cause concern. Members
of an evaluation team, composed of social workers, pediatricians,
and other specialized clinicians evaluate and recommend medical,
social, psychological, and educational interventions. To see an

Dental
Clinic - Provides routine and
specialized dentistry services for children and adults with mental
retardation and developmental disabilities. Offers consultations
and evaluations of oral health as needed by other clinics.
The
Family Place Pediatric Practice - The
Family Place Pediatric Practice is a primary care pediatric practice
located at the University of Alabama at Birmingham Medical Center.
It provides general pediatric care to children from birth to age
22. The clinic's goal is providing complete medical care in an
open, supportive environment. It offers a unique team approach
to treating children. The staff includes pediatricians, pediatric
nurse practitioners, family counselors, and pediatric social workers.
Inborn
Errors of Metabolism Clinic - Provides evaluation following diagnosis of infants, children,
and some adults with PKU (phenylketonuria), galactosemia, and other
rare inborn errors of metabolism. Offers medical, nutritional,
and educational assistance to these individuals and their families.
Infant
and Toddler Clinic -
Provides interdisciplinary diagnostic services for infants and toddlers
and their families. Young children with developmental delays, health
related concerns, and/or significant developmental disabilities are
often referred to this program. Additional consultation with early
intervention programs and daycare programs is offered.
KnowKidding.org -
is a web site service of the Civitan-Sparks Clinics and the Civitan
International Research Center. The Health Libraries Access for Alabama
Early
Intervention grant was written in the spring of 2002 to meet the
requirements for
a grant RFP (request for projects) by the National Libraries of
Medicine, within the National Institutes of Health under the Department
of Health
and Human Services. We were successful in getting these funds to
Alabama to develop an administrative infrastructure, a web site,
and a training
program for Alabama Early Intervention providers and parents. The
emphasis is on teaching and learning how to acquire high quality
health information
over the Internet and getting that information in the hands of
providers and families. The grant to create www.knowkidding.org and
its related activities was written by Dr. Judith Drews, senior
physical therapist. Civitan-Sparks Clinics is known as the State's
original one-stop
center for world class early intervention services and clinical

Multiple
Disabilities Clinic - Provides
team evaluations and consultations for children, adolescents, and
young adults who have multiple needs (including mental retardation,
cerebral palsy, epilepsy, sensory challenges) with a primary focus
on working with individuals and families to develop recommendations
and plans for addressing identified concerns and needs. In addition
to center-based evaluations, individual team members may make home,
school, and other community visits to address specific questions,
such as classroom programming, enhancement of the individual education
plan, accessibility, and strategies for ensuring meaningful inclusion
in all settings.
Neurology
Clinic / Rett Syndrome Research Program - The UAB Neurology
Clinic for Rett Syndrome in the UAB Sparks-Civitan Clinics
has been operational since 1992. The clinic provides comprehensive
evaluations for children with or suspected of having Rett Syndrome.
The clinic and its research activities are directed by Alan
Percy, M.D., Director of Medical Research at the CIRC. Dr.
Percy is an internationally recognized expert in the diagnosis
and care of children with Rett Syndrome. The clinic has access
to a full range of health professionals available within the
Civitan-Sparks Clinics and The Children's Hospital of Alabama
and participates in the multi-site Rare
Diseases Clinical Research Center program.
In addition, the neurology clinic includes a Behavioral Genetics
clinic to provide comprehnsive evaluations for individuals
with Williams, Angelman, and Prader-Willi syndromes. Also,
the neurology clinic is available to Civitan-Sparks clinicians
as a referral source for consultations.
Occupational
Therapy Clinic - Evaluates, assesses,
and treats children with physical, emotional, and developmental
deficits. Services focus on fine motor skills, visual perception,
sensory processing, organizational skills, overall smooth, coordinated
and purposeful movement, and other activities of daily living.
Pediatric
Neuropsychology Clinic - Serves
children and adolescents aged 2-18 with diverse medical and neurodevelopmental
disorders. Specific populations include epilepsy, traumatic brain
injury, spinal cord injury, brain tumor, cancer, leukemia, sickle
cell disease, central nervous system infections, genetic and metabolic
disorders, and the full range of neurodevelopmental disorders (including
Pervasive Developmental Delays, complicated Attention Deficit Hyperactivity
Disorder, and Learning Disabilities).
Physical
Therapy and Positioning Clinic - Provides assessments and therapy plans for individuals
with physical, sensory, and cognitive disabilities, and developmental
delay. Provides individual or group intervention to some individuals
and technical assistance to parents, other professionals, and agencies
to reach a much greater number of individuals around the state
and region. Provides prescriptions for therapeutic equipment and
technology based solutions and services.
Psychoeducational
and Psychology Clinic - Evaluates school-age children who have academic difficulties
that cannot be adequately addressed by local school systems and
psychosocial services providers.
Speech
and Language Clinic - Provides communication services to individuals who have
developmental disorders from birth through adulthood. Click

Provides multidisciplinary evaluations of children who have congenital
