Meet Your Neighbor Video

Update 2005

Below you can read about the history and philosophy of the Meet Your Neighbor video. The UAB Civitan International Research Center (CIRC) is pleased to announce that the video is now available to view over the Internet along with several other video projects that may be of interest to all persons interested in programs related to community inclusion for people with disabilities and MR/DD research. Click here to go to the CIRC media streaming web site. The site provides instructions to play video or get software to view the video. If you have Real Player installed you may go directly to the MYN video (depending on your connection speed it may take several seconds for video to start).

History of the Meet Your Neighbor Video

Starting in the Fall of 2001 we began planning a video to help communicate the positive contributions of persons with disabilities at home, worship, school, work, and play. This video called Meet Your Neighbor had its world premier at a reception hosted by Alabama Power Company at its corporate headquarters in Birmingham on May 16, 2002.

The video, fifteen minutes in length to accommodate its use in meetings and training sessions, was shot on location in Birmingham, Montgomery, Tuscaloosa, and at various locales in Alabama. The MYN Guiding Council is appreciative of the efforts of many persons, families, businesses, state, and local agencies who helped make this effort possible. Editing and post production of the video was performed in the Instructional Technology section of the UAB Civitan Research Center by the Center's faculty and staff.

The Meet Your Neighbor video is being provided free of charge (except shipping and handling when needed) to schools, libraries, businesses, human resource personnel, civic organizations, and to many other persons and groups with an interest in developmental disabilities. The video has been closed captioned in English and Spanish. Be sure to specify the language of your choice when making requests for copies of the video.

We Would Like to Hear From You!

It is very important to our project and to people with developmental disabilities that we hear from you. We would like to know what you think about the Meet Your Neighbor video. Click here to access a form in the Word or Acrobat format (PDF) that we are using to document consumer impressions and responses. These will be used to help evaluate this and future projects of this nature and are also needed to fulfill obligations in our funding proposal.

Initially 1,000 copies of our video will be distributed throughout Alabama and to people, businesses and agencies with an interest in developmental disabilities. Call 205-934-2965 if you would like to know more or to obtain copies of the video. Though as of 2005 the MYN Project has met its goals and completed its funding cycle a limited number of videos are still available.
